Chair’s Welcome,
Thank you for your interest in the Department of Fine Arts at UNO. For more than forty years, the department has trained thousands of students in the visual arts, at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and played an important role in the contemporary arts scene in New Orleans. Our faculty, students and alumni are working artists who exhibit all over the United States and around the globe. The department offers BA degrees in studio art (painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and digital media) and art history as well as an MFA in studio art. Our undergraduates receive their studio training within the College of Liberal Arts, and as a department we are very much committed to the tradition of a liberal arts education. The MFA is a terminal degree, and our students are prepared to be professional studio artists and, if they chose, educators at the college and university level. The faculty is committed to remain current relative to issues and tendencies in contemporary art to better serve all our students, the university, and our community. The BA and MFA degree programs all meet the high standards of the national accrediting agency, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The Department of Fine Arts has cooperative relationships with the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Contemporary Arts Center and many of the commercial and non-profit galleries in town. In the Fall of 2008 we opened our own off-campus gallery in the rapidly growing St. Claude Arts District. The UNO-St. Claude Gallery is committed to exhibiting the work of UNO faculty and students as well as to offering a venue for emerging artists who wish to show significant work that does not generally find a commercial venue. We hope you will visit the gallery at 2429 St. Claude Avenue. The faculty and students at the Fine Arts Department make it an extraordinarily vibrant place to see and study art.
